In afternoon action, the Cardinals and Diamondbacks were growing home favorites while the Yankees at -125 at Seattle have them almost to a Push. Here are evening line moves and free picks to review and ponder for MLB selections. Like we say every day, understanding line moves can build your bankroll.
MLB – (909) CHIC. CUBS at (910) MIAMI 7:10 ET WPWR, FSN-FL
Jon Lester (4-3, 3.30 ERA) went 4-1 with a 1.76 ERA over six starts the last month and he’s drawn another tough assignment in Dan Haren (5-2, 3.03). Lester lone loss came against Max Scherzer and Washington, 3-0 in his last start. At 34, Haran’s had a revival to this point with a 1.45 ERA in five starts at Marlins Ballpark, with his team winning four times. In the rubber game of the series, the Cubs have slipped from -125 favorites to -110 and Miami is 6-3 and averaging 5.1 RPG against left-handed pitchers, while the Cubs offense has been slumping in averaging 2.4 RPG in last seven. Doug’s Choice – Lean Miami
MLB – (911) L.A. DODGERS at (912) COLORADO 8:10 ET ESPN2
The Rockies were so close to sweeping the Dodgers yesterday but came up just short when Alex Guerrero belted a pinch-hit grand slam in the ninth inning to give L.A. a 9-8 victory. Los Angeles with Mike Bolsinger (3-1, 1.15) has crumbled from a -145 fave to -115 in the series finale. Even with that defeat, Colorado has won eight of 11 and tonight’s starter Chad Bettis (2-0, 2.96) has improved each time out since being called up from Triple A. The pitching matchup appears rather close, but at this price is with the Dodgers and like last night if is close late, the Colorado bullpen is shaky. Doug’s Choice – Lean Los Angeles
MLB – (921) CHICAGO at (922) TEXAS 7:05 ET CSN-C, FSN-SW
Though the Texas offense has compiled 7.5 RPG in their last 11 contests, hard to find fault with those placing MLB picks lowering the total from 8.5 to 8. We have Chris Sale (4-2, 3.66) for Chicago and all he’s done in his past four starts is post a 1.71 ERA, with 40 strikeouts in 31 2/3 innings. His mound opponent is Nick Martinez (4-1, 2.03), who is the Rangers record-holder of 16 consecutive starts of allowing three or less earned runs and the meter is still running. After Texas 15-2 wipe out of the White Sox yesterday, they are 12-2 UNDER at home after scoring nine runs or more since 2013. Doug’s Choice – Play Under
MLB – (925) CLEVELAND at (926) KANSAS CITY 8:10 ET STO, FSN-KC
With Kansas City in an offensive funk, hard to imagine them busting loose from scoring a mere 2.1 RPG in losing six of seven having to face Corey Kluber (3-5, 3.52). The Cleveland ace has been brilliant in his past four starts with a 1.41 ERA and has sick 50 K’s in those 32 innings of work. Sportsbooks opened this division matchup at 7.5 and it has cascaded to 7. The important variable is what does a potent Indians offense do with the Royals Jason Vargas (3-2, 5.16), who’s been very hittable and in his career is 8-3 OVER in 11 starts versus Cleveland. Though Kluber will be motivated after two mediocre starts against K.C. this season, these teams are 6-1 OVER this season and climb over the number. Doug’s Choice – Play Over
