Adam Conley vs. Tanner Roark
The Marlins are coming off back-to-back home losses to the Tigers, while the Nats return to DC for their home opener at 2-0 following two tight games against a bad Braves team.
Conley is coming off an eye-opening spring in which his fastball velociy ticked up a couple of notches. He was a mid-90s guy in the minors, but arm issues had him down at a 91.3 average fastball in 2015. Now throwing 94-95 again, and with good secondary pitches plus a focus that prompted manager Don Mattingly to describe him as ‘a man on a mission’, Conley qualities as a sleeper. Get on him now.
Roark is back in the rotation again after being pushed back to the pen in 2015 as the odd man out following the Max Scherzer signing. It looked like a raw deal for Roark, who won 15 games and posted an impressive 5.1 WAR in a breakout 2014. But truth is, his minor-league numbers were nothing special, his stuff is just-OK, his 2015 wasn’t great, and that 2014 might be a high water mark. This line is coming down on this game for a reason.
