Hisashi Iwakuma vs. Martin Perez
The Dodgers were ready to give Iwakuma a three-year deal over the winter, but had some medical questions and backed off. New Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto said ‘thank you very much’ , and the team’s No. 2 starter fell back into his lap — and now Iwakuma is pitching on a one-year deal (with options for two more).
Iwakuma will face the gauntlet of Rangers’ left-handed bats, including emerging 2B Rougned Odor, who is 5-for-11 with a homer against him.But it’s Adrian Beltre (11-for-36, 3 HR, 5 RBI) who has done the most damage against the veteran Japanese right-hander. Still, in three starts v. Texas, Iwakuma is 2-0-3.21 with a .216 opponents BA.
Rangers observers feel Martin Perez is poised for a solid season in his second year removed from Tommy John surgery, and you’ll get no argument here. But in two starts v. Seattle, he has a 5.73 ERA, allowing 14 hits (including two HRs) and four walks in 11 IP. Despite the lefty-lefty matchup, Kyle Seager has some ownage here at 10-for-20, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 6 R.
The Mariners didn’t use any of their late-inning relievers in yesterday’s opener, while Jake Diekman and Shawn Tolleson threw an inning apiece for the Rangers.
