With the second of two major holidays in the books, we have four more days until the baseball All-Star break. In afternoon action on Thursday, Milwaukee has tumbled from -130 to -115 or less in their series finale with Miami. It is another sweltering day in the Midwest, with temperatures around 100 in Chicago and high dew points. Because of an expected steady breeze blowing out to leftfield at U.S. Cellular Field, the total on the Rangers and White Sox has risen from 9.5 to 10. As always, review the tasty trend nuggets at the bottom of the page.
MLB – (959) PHILADELPHIA at (960) N.Y. METS 7:10 EDT CSN, SNY
R.A. Dickey might lead the Major Leagues with a dozen victories, but he’s not considered a sure thing to snag his 13th win facing Philadelphia tonight. Dickey (12-1, 2.15 ERA) and the Mets were -140 money line favorites at most sportsbooks, but have been lowered to under -117, taking on Cole Hamels (10-4, 3.08) and the Phillies. The New York knuckle-baller is 6-0 with a scant 1.85 ERA at Citi Field, however, Hamels and the Phils are 6-1 in their visiting uniforms this season. The Mets were demolished 9-2 yesterday and are 11-1 revenging a home loss of six runs or more. 3DW Position – New York wins
MLB – (965) CINCINNATI at (966) SAN DIEGO 10:05 EDT FSOH, FSD
Last year, tonight’s starting pitchers were wearing the other team’s uniform and were trade for each other in the off-season. This evening, Mat Latos (7-2, 4.42) and Edinson Volquez (5-7, 3.68) will have a shot at revenge against their old clubs. Latos has been very good in his last 13 starts with a 7-0 record and 3.72 ERA. Nevertheless, the betting action has mostly been on Volquez and San Diego, with the Padres at +122 after starting at +135. If the Friars are to pull the upset, they will have to hit, as Volquez has the majors’ second-lowest run support average at 2.69. San Diego is frolicking with five wins in a row, yet is 9-24 at home vs. a NL starting pitcher whose WHIP is 1.250 or better. 3DW Position – Cincinnati wins
MLB – (971) TAMPA BAY at (972) CLEVLEAND 7:05 EDT SUN, STO
Tampa Bay takes to the road feeling good after winning another home series against the Yankees, but will run into a blazing hot Cleveland offense, in the first of four encounters. The Indians have tallied 11 or more hits in five of their last six outings and are averaging 7.6 runs per contest in their previous seven games. The Rays Jeremy Hellickson (4-4, 3.44) is 0-4 with a 4.45 ERA in his last six starts, which might spell trouble for him and his teammates. Those betting on baseball certainly see it this way and have switched Tampa Bay from a -120 favorite to a +105 underdog. Off their 12-3 thumping of the Angels yesterday, Cleveland is 13-3 after a win by six runs or more. 3DW Position – Cleveland wins
MLB – (975) BALTIMORE at (976) L.A. ANGELS 10:05 EDT MASN2, FSW
Subtract Jered Weaver’s masterful Monday performance, the Angels pitching staff has been tagged for 6.3 runs per outing in their last six other tilts. It is not just one area; it has been starters and relievers that have made a mess for LA/2. Garrett Richards (2-1, 2.81) is one of those pitchers that made a negative contribution, allowing 10 runs (five earned) in 4 1/3 innings on Saturday. With the bullpen spent, Richards will have to pitch like he has in previous starts at the Big A (1.66 ERA, leading to three Angels wins) for the Halos to starting winning again. The club from Anaheim was a -170 betting choice, but has crumbled to -140, in spite of Orioles Jake Arrieta (3-9, 5.81) having a 1-7 mark with a 5.93 ERA in 10 career outings against the AL West. 3DW Position – Los Angeles wins
