The FedEx playoffs start Thursday in Jersey City, NJ with the Barclays Golf Championship. This course is gorgeous, with the backdrop of New York City on several holes. This is a gem.
The top 125 ranked players in the FedEx cup are in the field, with the exception of Steve Stricker and Zack Johnson, due to family obligations. Tiger Woods enters as the prohibitive favorite at 5-1. Three players are 15-1; Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlrory. Liberty National Golf Club, 7,346 yards par 70, will host this year’s Barclays Championship, it’s a tournament in which they rotate courses. This is a pretty big golf course, especially for a par 70 so look towards a leaderboard littered with big hitters. I see some value in Dustin Johnson and Jason Day, both listed at 25-1.
The field for next week’s Deutsche Bank will be trimmed to the top 100 in the standings (including Stricker and Johnson), meaning 25 players will be eliminated this weekend. The top 70 make it to the BMW Championship, the third leg of the playoffs, which begins after a week off after the Deutsche Bank. Finally, the top 30 advance to Atlanta, where a winner will be crowned September 22nd. Tiger owns a commanding lead currently, but with so many points at stake in the coming weeks, anything can happen.
Defending champion, Nick Watney, is set to tee of at 7:21 Thursday along side John Huh and Kyle Stanley. He enters as number 63 in the standings. Ben Crane snuck in at number 125, ten points ahead of Robert Streb and eight other players were within 30 points. Players are grouped together based on how they sit in the rankings. The 2014 Barclays will be played at Ridgewood in Paramus, NJ.
