CFB – (151) ALABAMA vs. (152) CLEMSON 8:30 ET ESPN
The total has been tumbling from 53.5 to 51 in the college football title game. The Alabama defense is undoubtedly one reason for the total slippage, but bettors have taken a closer look at Clemson’s defense from a matchup perspective and found the Tigers have at least the personnel to contain or limit what the Crimson Tide like to do on offense. We do have contrasting angles to view this title tilt, with Clemson 8-1 UNDER after scoring 37 or more points in consecutive games and the Tide 14-3 OVER as a neutral field favorite. Update – The total did sink as low as 50, but has come up to 50.5. Alabama at -7 has held up the entire way. Early on the Crimson Tide were running at close to 80% of bets placed and money taken in, but that has since leveled off. The majority of sides money is still on Bama at around two-thirds, but large wagers also on Clemson have become the norm. All sportsbooks are heavy on Tigers for the money line, which is expected and the books are hoping Alabama wins, but does not cover.
Betting Trend – 51% backing Over
Doug’s VPID Take – Lean Over
NBA – (505) MIAMI at (506) GOLDEN STATE 10:35 ET SUN, CSN-BAY (side and total)
The Heat are in a very difficult stretch of the season playing a high volume of road games. Having lost at Utah Saturday, they will seek to avoid making it two in a row for the first time in a month away from home. Hoops bettors are giving them little chance at Golden State, chasing them from +11.5 to +13.5. Miami would seem to have almost no chance to win outright with the Warriors 17-0 at home, but Golden State is only 9-8 ATS versus the oddsmaker. Stands to reason that if the defending champs are rising favorites, the total would follow and it has, up two points to 206. The Heat’s defense has been off a bit of late and Golden State and OVER are not bad looking wagers.
Betting Trend – 96% backing Over and 67% on Golden State
Doug’s VPID Take – Play Over and lean Golden State
CBB – (511) UNC-GREENSBORO at (512) WESTERN CAROLINA 7:00 ET
Of the six contests on the big board for college basketball tonight, four are from the Southern Conference. One which stands out is this matchup, as the total jumped from 140.5 to 143. What caused this amount of change, it could be overreaction. UNC-Greensboro has given up 79.9 points per game on the road, but much of that has come against stronger competition, against the likes of three ACC teams and usually high-scoring Davidson. With West Carolina shooting under 40 percent from the field (39.7%) and averaging 72.6 PPG, not sure this large of line move is warranted. We’ll lean the other way with the Catamounts 9-2 UNDER after playing a game as favorite the last two seasons.
Betting Trend – 98% backing Over
Doug’s VPID Take – Lean Under
NHL – (1) BOSTON at (2) N.Y RANGERS 7:05 ET NESN, MSG
Both these Original Six rivals have been playing poorly for some time. Boston has dropped six of eight and New York is only marginally better at 3-6 SU. Linemakers made the Rangers fairly standard -140 money line favorites, in what looks to be a evenly matched affair, but sharper money in on the road team, which has lowered New York to -125. Though the Blueshirts are very respectable 15-7 SU at home, the Bruins are 12-6 SU on the road, have won six of seven versus New York and a playoff series since May of 2013.
Betting Trend – 62% backing New York
Doug’s VPID Take – Lean Boston
