To paraphrase from Fox Sports announcer Tim Brando, “the road has been unkind” to Carolina this season. In doing any NHL betting, is makes a lot of sense to understand the Hurricanes road woes.
Carolina will be in Anaheim tonight, not far from Disneyland and they have a 3-12 SU away record. The best way to describe the Hurricanes offense is Mickey Mouse, and not in jovial way, but in the derogatory sense.
Carolina only scores 2.5 goals a game at home and they tumble to 2.18 when playing on the road. The NHL odds at one of the most trusted sportsbooks, 5Dimes, has the Hurricanes at +150 road underdogs to the Ducks.
Those oddsmakers are looking at the same numbers you are. Carolina puts no pressure on opposing defenses, which is why only one team has few power play chances and just two teams have scored fewer than the five goals the ‘Canes have with a man advantage.
This comes from not applying enough pressure in the offensive zone. Carolina is middle of the road in shots per contest at 30, however, the quality of those attempts is insufficient, with too many long distance blasts that the opposing goalie can handle with ease. This plays directly into the coach Bill Peters squad being 28th (out of 30) in goals scored when playing at even strength.
Anaheim has not been sterling with a 12-14 SU mark, but they are 22-5 at home after two consecutive road games, while Carolina is 0-9 as visitors when the total is 5 or less this season.
For NHL picks, almost impossible to back Carolina away from home and we will not on Wednesday night.
