Their records at the moment might not blow you away, nonetheless, there are four college basketball teams which could be very profitable the rest of the season and should be closely followed.
In each case, these teams are well coached and have a particular element which is worth considering.
Minnesota Golden Gophers (13-1, 8-4 ATS)
This is not late “breaking news” you get every night in your local city, since Minnesota has proven themselves already this season as a viable squad. What everyone might not know or understand, barring injuries like they have sustained the past couple of seasons, the Golden Gophers might well be the best team in a loaded Big Ten Conference.
Few teams in the country have the kind of depth coach Tubby Smith has and he has a mature squad that has a varied skill set to play different styles. In college basketball, guard play is essential and Minnesota is rock solid in this department. If Smith can get his frontcourt players to attack the defensive glass as diligently as they do on the other end of the court, this is a team which can cover a lot of spreads.
Virginia Commonwealth (11-3, 4-4 ATS)
It was a minor upset when head coach Shaka Smart decided to stay in Richmond for at least another year instead of moving on to a bigger job with more cash (maybe he knows the baby in the Jimmy Fallon commercials).
Possibly Smart is like Brad Stevens at Butler, content for the time being and able to call the shots his way. Whatever the reasoning, Smart’s has as many as six players who are skilled shooters who can make buckets consistently. VCU makes over 38 percent of their three-point shots, which can be used to build leads or overcome deficits.
Oddsmakers are on to the Rams and Smart and beating potentially inflated numbers will not always be simple, but VCU is so frenetic on defense (leads the country in forced turnovers), they are a threat to blow open any contest.
Notre Dame (12-1, 5-4-1 ATS)
Coach Mike Brey has found a formula to make the Fighting Irish a consistent Top 25 team. Sure Brey would love to have more “one-and-done” recruits, yet, has instead focused on those that fit the team concept and want to work hard to improve each season.
Notre Dame is able to build continuity among its players and is one of the top shooting teams in the country and because of the type of ball movement they have, the Irish make over 57 percent of two-point attempts, again, among the best in college basketball.
Notre Dame seldom commits many turnovers and has a philosophy about not committing silly fouls, giving opponents cheap points. The best way to bet the Fighting Irish is when the spreads are single digits, but just stay away from them when they are giving five or more on the road.
Wichita State Shockers (13-1, 7-3-1 ATS)
Plenty of other teams have gaudier defensive statistics, however, watch Wichita State play and you quickly realize opposing teams have to work extremely hard for every one of their 57 points the Shockers allow.
Coach Greg Marshall has done a great job at Wichita State and though this year’s team does not have the best collection of shooters, the way the Shockers ‘D teams up’, they can take away the opponents will and beat them regularly.
