The second playoff event kicks off Friday in Norton, MA at the Duetsche Bank Championship. TPC Boston is the host, a par 71 layout measuring 7216 yards. What’s really great about this course is the par five finishing hole, many things can happen, good or bad. Rory McIlroy won this event last year and is a 15-1 choice in this year’s event. Tiger Woods is the clear cut favorite at 7-1.
The field this week is trimmed to 100 players. Groups again are paired where they fall in the overall FedEx Cup rankings. This builds a dynamic threesome of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott in the first and second rounds, Friday and Saturday. This event ends on Labor Day. Virtually any win here will vault the champ into the top ten, if not higher and will virtually guarantee a ticket to Atlanta for the Tour Championship, a goal of every PGA member. Every purse in the playoffs is eight million dollars.
There are a few decent value bets on the board this week. I don’t see much value in any that are 20-1 or better, but a few I think could be decent include: Jason Day 25-1, Jordan Spieth 40-1 and Charles Howell III 100-1. One matchup I find enticing is Keegan Bradley +105 verses Jason Dufner. I expect Keegan to play well this weekend in his backyard. You may remember these two battling in the epic PGA Championship in Atlanta in 2011.
CBS hands it over the rest of the way to the Golf Channel and NBC. The players are off next week and the top 70 will head to Conway Farms GC in Illinois September 12th.
