MLB – (913) L.A. DODGERS at (914) SAN FRANCISCO 10:15 ET SNLA, KNTV
The hated rivals have split a couple of low-scoring 2-1 confrontations and they move ahead to Game 3 of four in this series. Neither reported contender has seen a good month and that has been especially true for San Francisco at 7-14 (-10.2 units). Sportsbooks sent out Johnny Cueto (3-1, 5.25 ERA) as -111 favorite, but those betting baseball would have nothing of it and quickly made the slumping Giants +107 underdogs. San Fran will face lefty Alex Wood (5.40 ERA) and though they are not scoring any more runs against left-handers, at least they are 4-5. Also, Giants are 17-5 when L.A. is in town.
Betting Trend – 95% backing San Francisco
Doug’s VPID Take – Lean San Francisco
MLB – (921) SEATTLE at (922) DETROIT 7:10 ET RTNW, FSDT
Detroit is battling injuries, saw Miguel Cabrera go on the DL and yesterday got flipped from a favorite to underdog against Seattle. So what happens, the Tigers exploded the last two games for 32 total runs. Bettors are still not convinced Detroit will carry on, especially against Seattle’s James Paxton (2-0, 1.78). The Mariners were released as -110 favorites and have been elevated to -130 or higher depending on the sportsbook. With the M’s 2-10 away from Coffee Town and Detroit 21-5 after scoring nine or more runs, have to consider the underdog.
Betting Trend – 62% backing Seattle
Doug’s VPID Take – Lean Detroit
NHL – (1) NASHVILLE at (2) ST. LOUIS 8:00 ET NBCSN
St. Louis was popular series pick among hockey experts over Minnesota (your truly had them) and they are slight favorite over Nashville in this series. In the opening contest, the Blues are sliding favorites, down from -135 to -120 or less. The concern is Nashville dominated top-seeded Chicago in a sweep and is one of the best puck possession teams in the NHL despite regular season record. I firmly believe Nashville takes one of the first two games, thus, since we have the underdog position, taking the Predators tonight and consider them for Game 2 if they fall this evening.
Betting Trend – 75% backing Nashville
Doug’s VPID Take – Lean Nashville
NHL – (3) EDMONTON at (4) ANAHEIM 10:35 ET NBCSN
The up and coming Edmonton Oilers face a second veteran team that has been through playoff wars. Edmonton took out the first one in San Jose but will take on a smoldering Anaheim squad that has not dropped a contest in 18 tries in regulation (15-0-3). Those wagering on hockey still prefer what they are seeing out of the Oilers and the Ducks have flown from -140 to -128 or lower. Prefer the value of Anaheim at home to open the series.
Betting Trend – 70% backing Anaheim
Doug’s VPID Take – Anaheim wins
