Rangers Take Down Arizona

The early season for New York Rangers fans has already been filled with joy and grief and they have only played seven games. New York burst out of the gate like American Pharoah in winning their first three games, but looked slower than a plow horse in looking the next three, before defeating San Jose three nights ago 4-0. Henrik Lundqvist is expected back between the pipes after a game off and he has a 2.16 goals against average and .931 save percentage.

Arizona’s first six games are identical to New York’s, three consecutive wins followed by three straight setbacks. The Coyotes defense has broken down and goalie Mike Smith has not been sharp, surrendering 11 goals in 85 shot attempts.

The NHL odds have New York as -235 favorites and this would often be a spot to look at the puck line to reduce risk. The problem with that thinking is the Rangers are not an explosive offense and more defensive-minded and they will often play conservatively with a lead and take one goal victories. This NHL handicapper will take the risk with New York having won six straight over Arizona at Madison Garden and 11 of 13.

Ducks Quack by Predators

In the Ducks first four games they only found the back of the net one time and were shutout on three occasions. Three main Anaheim goal-scorers, Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf and Ryan Kesler have yet to beat the opposing goaltender and if the Ducks are going to pull the upset, at least one of players needs to make a contribution.

Nashville is 5-1 but normally reliable Pekka Rinne has been off his game in surrendering four goals each of the last two contests and the Predators defense overall has been victimized 11 times on past three outings.
