Betting College Hoops: Hump Day (Under)Dogs

For Wednesday’s college hoops underdogs,  we will look into a couple contests that are not on everyone’s radar, however, that does not make them potentially very solid wagering options.

If you are astute when it comes to betting, this continues to be the time of year where those setting the college basketball odds will generate some weak lines. You have the NFL going on, bowl season approaching, the NBA and NHL, along with college hoops. Most oddsmakers cannot wait for conference play to be begin because there is more of a rhythm to play along with scheduling and it is easier to know teams, since so many play non-lined games early, which does not help those setting the odds in any manner.

To be clear, I am not saying sportsbooks have bad lines on these two college basketball picks I have here, rather, I just view them as opportunities.

William & Mary’s Ability To Shoot Make Them Dangerous Dog

William & Mary (5-2, 3-0 ATS)  makes the trip over George Mason (4-4, 3-3 ATS) for a nonconference clash. Expectations are rather low for both teams once conference play commences, as each has been pegged to finish in the bottom half of the standings.

William & Mary likes to play at a faster pace and to this point has been very good shooting team at 48.1 percent. The Tribe averages 60 attempts per game and 27 have been behind the arc and they have converted on 48.7 percent of those heaves. Part of that success has come against weaker competition, nonetheless, this is their style.

George Mason is more deliberate and averages 68.9 PPG. Against better opponents, the Patriots are shooting just 41.7 percent, however, there was and is not a belief that this will be a strong offensive club.

These teams used to be partners in the Colonial or CAA before George Mason moved up to the A-10. With William & Mary being able to score more easily and 27-11 ATS after two straight games where they made 10 or more three-point shots, I will snag the +5.5 points with the Tribe.

Regional Rivalry Goes To Home Underdog

St. Bonaventure’s makes the 72-mile trip to Buffalo to face Canisius (4-4, 5-3 ATS) in a surprisingly contentious rivalry. This comes from Canisius feeling like the little brother to St. Bonaventure (5-2, 3-2 ATS), while Bonnies play in stronger conference and are more of a big time program.

St. Bonaventure is the tougher defensive club and has held opposing team to just 39.6 percent shooting, but is middle of the road offensively despite scoring 76.1 PPG themselves.

The Golden Griffins have been more accurate shooters, connecting on 49.5 percent. Canisius will have to hold up on the defensive end because the Bonnies like to score in the paint and draw a lot of fouls.

With Canisius always motivated for this contest and 5-2 SU at home of late in this series and St. Bonnie’s 2-9 ATS off  two or more victories, I will grab the 9.5 points.

Free Basketball Pick – Canisius +9.5
