For those betting baseball, the question on the Yankees will be energy left. Sure New York just came off the All-Star break, but how will they react tonight in the Twin Cities?
Because of Saturday’s 16-inning marathon against Boston, the Yankees were two innings shy of playing the equivalent four games in 34 hours and as compared to the Red Sox tonight, New York had to fly overnight after splitting four-game series.
Will Joe Girardi’s guys just mail this one in or will they suck it up knowing this is one of seven more road games this week and they have to play anyway? I’ll suck up Tampa Bay loss yesterday which left me at 25-18 of late and look to beat the MLB odds again.
With Michael Pineda done for the season, Joe Girardi turns to Bryan Mitchell tonight. The 26-year right-hander is 1-1 in dozen relief appearances this year with a 5.06 ERA. At Triple-A this season, Mitchell is 2-2 with 3.60 ERA. Last September he got a call up and made five starts and was 1-2 with 4.16 ERA, but control was an issue with 10 walks and only 11 strikeouts in 25 innings.
After a brutal June 12th start (9 runs on 9 hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings), rookie Adalberto Mejia (4-4, 4.43 ERA) has gotten much better with a 2.59 ERA covering his last four starts. Though improving, the left-hander is still averaging a walk for every two innings tossed, which has lead to WHIP of 1.48.
