As the regular season approaches, those betting baseball start to move ahead to thinking about the opening weeks and look at schedules that could provide opportunity to cash winning tickets.
While it is impossible to know the frame of mind a team will be in once the season begins, the more astute bettor working the MLB odds knows the strengths and weaknesses of teams and can make sound choices based on how teams should play.
Though every scheduling situation is not a winner for a variety reasons when making MLB picks, there situations that do standout and we will address them now.
Bet Against the Arizona Diamondbacks
Arizona took a step backwards last season and rebooted much of its top baseball management positions. Though the D-Backs will likely still score runs and have generally improved starting pitching, they could be in a hole long before the end of April. The Snakes open with three teams that were in the playoffs last year and figure to be there again in 2017. Arizona has four home games with San Francisco, followed by three with the AL champion Cleveland Indians. The first road trip takes them to play the Giants again and weekend series versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. Good Luck.
Bet Against the Atlanta Braves
This is probably sound advice anyways for most of the season, but it really makes sense early. The Braves wanted to make sure new ballpark was completely ready and open on the road against the New York Mets, Pittsburgh and Miami. Atlanta is finally home and is facing an equal of sorts in San Diego with four games, but that possible euphoria is diminished with Washington in town next.
Bet On the Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox off-season moves have them as the betting favorite to win the AL. In the first two weeks of the season they only have four road games, all in Detroit and the Tigers are considered to be only slightly above .500. Otherwise, the Boston will be series favorites against the Pirates, Baltimore and Tampa Bay at Fenway Park and have the talent and schedule for a fast start.
Bet On the New York Mets
The Mets won 87 games last year, but it felt like fewer because of all the injuries. Chances are their will be a return to health and New York will contend with Washington in the NL East. The Metropolitans open at home versus lowly Atlanta and always hard to figure Miami. The first road excursion sends them to rebuilding Philadelphia and the Marlins, before returning to the Big Apple to face the Phillies for three. Anything less than an 11-5 start would be considered a disappointment.
