2013 PGA Championship
Oak Hill Country Club – Rochester, New York
August 8 – 11, 2013
This year’s 2013 PGA Championship will be played at Oak Hill Country Club, the site of the 2003 tournament won by Shaun Micheel. This year’s tournament’s field boasts 99 out of the top 100 players in the world. Number 12 player, Louis Oosthuizen, has withdrawn due to a nagging back injury.
The par 70 layout is 7,163 yards, only lengthened 29 yards from a decade before. Length will be less of an issue than accuracy off the tee. This likely neutralizes the bombers of the game, namely Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson.
Adam Scott is having a fantastic year and with his solid driving and GIR (greens in regulation) percentage, figures to be on the first page of the leaderboard come Sunday. He is a 15-1 choice, as is Phil Mickelson.
Lee Westwood is at 25-1 and is running out of opportunities to capture that elusive first major. It’s hard to fathom a player of that magnitude never entering this class of champions. He, too, is impressive off the tee and GIR percentage so keep an eye on him.
Henrik Stenson ranks sixth in fairways hit on the PGA tour and 2nd in GIR, has been all over the leaderboard lately. I just don’t trust him down the stretch at crunch-time and to make those pressure putts that the champion will normally have to make to seal the deal.
They are calling for the victor to be 5 or 6 under par, but don’t be surprised if the winner is 10 under or better. Obviously, the weather will factor into that. Two longshots I see value on are Charles Howell III and Jimmy Walker, both 200-1.
